The museum had been fantastic. Casey was still getting over how educated and charming Gabriel was, even in the midst of breathtaking art both magical and mundane, they just couldn't take their eyes off him the entire time. It was embarrassing, being caught more than once, but it was hard not to look and be in pleased wonder every time he was still there. This was real and it was all for Casey, and that was something they were going to cherish for a very long time. This was one of their first dates after the fateful party where they'd met and yet... walking down the road, hand-in-hand, making their way to dinner as the sun gave way to dazzling stars and galaxies residing beyond...

It felt only natural.

Thoughts going into far too sappy a direction, Casey raised their free hand and covered their mouth to prevent the smile trying to blossom. Oh, Gabriel was definitely going to think they were going too far, too fast, too swept off their feet. They had to be missing something somewhere. If they could just keep following the right steps a little while longer before Gabriel caught on to how clueless they were about all this, then... then maybe they could make it real. Fake it until you make it.

"I'm having fun," they said, more of a murmur considering their hand was still trying to stifle the smile. "I hope you are, too. Are you?"

"Am not," said Casey, faintly, while Gabriel continued to scent them out. It was rather an odd way to do it, something more sensual than the usual getting-to-know-someone that Casey was used to. Thankfully they still understood what Gabriel was up to, but could only make faces in sympathy to what humanoid so close-up must smell like to the sensitive nose of a dragon.

Being a dragonaught, though? That wasn't possible. Casey wasn't the kind of person to have more magic than anyone else, much less a soulmate. Not to say it wasn't impossible, but realistically-speaking... something like that was more likely for an ambitious person, surely? Someone full of life and vigor, and ready to match up to a dragon in spirit and passion. Casey wasn't any of that; they just wanted to stay warm by Gabriel's side and share in how amazing he was as long as he'd let them. "That can't be right."

"You are," he responded firmly as he reached up with a forelimb and tapped their nose with the pad of his finger, making sure to keep his claw away from their skin. They were acting silly, denying something that Gabriel knew was right. "Dragons don't make mistakes when it comes to their dragonaughts."

Done scenting for the moment, Gabriel rested his head against their chest, bumping against it slightly as if to let them know that he wanted to be held like before. "I'm sure you felt something the moment we met as well, even if it wasn't as strong as how a proper dragon feels it."

Nose wrinkling for the tap, and arms moving back to their previous position automatically, Casey found themselves scooting until their back touched the headboard and rested there with their dragon boyfriend resting up against their chest. This was beyond surreal, yet it was undeniably happening. There was no way Casey could make this up, not even in a dream. It was enough to make their head spin, and they dipped their face until it was pressed alongside Gabriel's muzzle as if seeking comfort.

"Didn't have to feel anything," they said quietly, remembering the night at that party where everything had slowed to a standstill when Casey noticed Gabriel's intense look across the room. It had been an instant attraction, a near heart-stopping moment. "All I had to do was look at you to know you're amazing."

Gabriel was happy that Casey decided to snuggle with him and he returned the favor by nuzzling them in an attempt to comfort them over the confusion this whole situation was causing for them. He didn't like them like this. All he wanted was to snuggle with them and make them happy again.

"There was a connection," he responded softly, thinking back to that moment as well. Of course he would remember the moment that he met his soulmate with astounding clarity. "When we caught each other's eyes. Nothing else mattered in that moment. It was just the two of us."

"That's how everyone describes meeting someone they like," Casey said. It was hard to acquiesce when here was someone trying to tell Casey they were some chosen one, part of a rich history and of spiritual significance to an entire race when all Casey really had going for them was... well, they weren't a bad person, anyway. Nothing too remarkable aside from the fact that Gabriel was trying to say everything to the contrary.

Sighing, they started to card their fingers up and down the crown of Gabriel's head. His scales were smooth and hard but not uncomfortable and the fur lining his joints was thick and incredibly soft. Casey could have probably stayed like this for a while if not for the apprehension. "If I'm a dragonaught, then doesn't that mean... we had no choice but to like each other?"

Gabriel's eyes closed partially as he felt Casey's fingers in his fur and on his scales. That felt in credibly nice and he wanted to just let Casey do that for as long as they wanted. Dragons were a very tactile race and loved to be intimately close to those they loved at all times and Gabriel was no exception. Right now, he was incredibly content despite the situation.

"We're not being forced into this, if that's what you're thinking," he said with a content sigh as his eyes closed all the way and his tongue poked out of his mouth a little bit. "Being soulmates only sparks the relationship and unlocks the potential to be closer than any normal couple. We still have to work at making the relationship go well."

It was kind of hard to be serious when a cuddly furnace was leaned up against them and cuddling for being petted. Even if it was Gabriel, a dragon who should have all rights been a fierce thing, it was enough to help melt their heart and calm down just a tad. The motion itself was soothing, too, and they kept doing it while following the ethereal trails of thought buzzing about their head.

"Like with this... whole thing?" Not that there was really a question of whether they would break up or not. Casey still couldn't stand the idea of not having Gabriel around, not with how close their heart already was to his. It was just an adjustment period. That was fair, right? "We're just—extra compatible. Somehow?"

The more powerful the dragon, the least likely they would appear to be fierce at first glance and Gabriel had a fair amount of power under his metaphorical belt. There was also the fact that he was also with Casey, who he loved immensely, so all he wanted to do was cuddle and get petted by them. He was a pretty simple creature with simple needs, all things considered.

"That's right." There was a rumble in his throat that could be translated to a purr. This was definitely nice, being here with them and not having to hide what he was from them anymore. "I'm glad you know now. That I'm a dragon."

It was an interesting balance to the humanoids' need for complexity. Rather, their inability to let things be simple for the sake of it made for an interesting contrast with the apparently-laid back nature of dragons. How confusing, counter to whatever bravado dragons had worked up about themselves and against what most people thought about dragons. Simple pleasures. Cuddling. Wooing random humans.

"Were you going to keep hiding it?" they asked. That seemed like a fair question, whether or not this would have continued or what else might have come up before this entire reveal. "I mean, everything. I don't think... the dragonaught thing—it's a nice thought, but I'm just... I like you and I like that you like me, but I'm not something that special."

Living for hundreds of years, dragons would go insane if they didn't keep things simple for themselves. Where the shorter lived species could get away with it, dragons just had too much time on their hands to be able to live like a humanoid does. Even city dragons, like Gabriel appeared to be, didn't keep up with the complex webs humanoids wove into everything they touched, only caring about the important things in life and nothing beyond that.

"No, I was going to tell you, though in a much better way than this," he admitted, sounding slightly embarrassed by how badly he's screwed this up for them. "It was going to be a gradual introduction to everything so you wouldn't get overwhelmed by all the information."

Such a life was easy to maintain when keeping out of the regular lives of the people around them. Living with humanoids was a quick way to get swept up in their hurried days, competition and camraderie pushing them toward achieving better and greater things whenever possible... and inspiring stress and disorders by the bucketloads. There were pros and cons to every lifestyle.

"All the information," Casey said doubtfully. "Is there more that I'm missing? More than we're soulmates?"

"Well, how much do you know about dragons?" He tilted his head slightly to look at them with one eye. There was a fair bit that Casey didn't know despite the revelation and if they wanted to know, then he'd explain it all to them. "And you don't even know why I'm living here yet either."

Snuggling closer, Gabriel started to fold his body so that he was covering Casey like a weird blanket made up of a coiled tube. "I'm not going to hide anything from you. You deserve to know everything that you want to about this."

"Just what they teach in school and what you see on shows and movies," Casey said, voice a bit filled with embarrassment. Thinking back on it, that was rather short-sighted, wasn't it? There were so many other things to know. Just because dragons hadn't been living within plain sight of most species, it wasn't as if they weren't still sharing the world, making peace with one another, that whole shebang...

When Gabriel started to coil up, Casey moved in surprise before settling once they saw what the dragon was doing. It was undeniably warm and comfortable, solid and living and just cozy. Nice, was the word. It was nice. "Is living here in a human form not normal? But not not-normal, either?"

"I have a lot to teach you then," he said with a toothy grin. It was going to be fun teaching Casey about dragons and their great history and culture. As a dragonaught, it was their history and culture too, even if it was for another life. The soul still counted them as a dragon and that was what truly mattered.

"In this specific city? Yeah, it's pretty rare." Dragons usually preferred bigger cities with a decent population of non-humanoids so that they could get things easily catered to their needs. While there was a good number of non-humanoids around this city, it wasn't exactly a dragon's first choice to live. "I'm only here for work-related reasons. We prefer our own cities."

Seeing so many teeth up close was somewhat unsettling, if only because Casey had never seen a dragon's teeth before. It was like looking into another world, being here in their own bed with their own boyfriend. Everything was different and yet nothing had changed. Things were about to get so much more complicated, but as long as Gabriel wanted to stay together with them, Casey wanted to learn.

"Draconic cities," they said, somewhere close to quiet wonder. Where Casey had grown up was the epitome of a humanoid settlement, hardly anything more than humans, dwarves and the occasional orc. Other humanoids passed through on travel and sometimes another species would dip in for some reason or another and disappear soon afterward and life went back to normal. Compared to all that, the current city was a gigantic melting pot to Casey's sensibilities; someday, they hoped to visit an even larger city and see what it was like to be truly immersed. Sticking to one species or even just one race seemed like living with your eyes and ears intentionally shut tight. Something was missing. "What sort of jobs require dragons to work as humans? I don't understand."

Well, Gabriel wanted to stay with Casey for the rest of Casey's life, so they were going to have plenty of time to get used to things getting shaken up by Gabriel's general existence. For the moment, he was going to close his mouth and not show off the incredibly sharp teeth he was the owner of.

"I'm sure you'll get the chance to see one. Probably the capital city of my clan since I primarily reside there when I'm not here," he said with a bit of a smile. Gabriel wasn't planning on telling them who exactly he was yet, but he could at least tell them where he was from. "There are some who live among the other species to keep our race as a whole up to date with the world outside of our cities. Others live in cities for ritual reasons since you humanoids have built up cities on sacred areas."

At least Casey had the decency to blush at that. They weren't personally responsible for things such as building cities or ancient history, but there was a lot to be said for appreciating the culture where you came from and the ones that were also affected by it. Other species had more than enough reason to be disgruntled over their holy lands and historical sites being built upon or touched in ways unintended by the constant march of humanoids.

"Sorry," said Casey, quietly, almost an aside save for the fact that it seemed more personal now. Shifting and shaking their head as if to try and move past that moment of cultural embarrassment, Casey tried to tease, "So spies and clergymen?"

"You don't need to apologize," he responded with a bit of amusement in his voice. It was adorable, seeing Casey apologize for their species building upon sacred land and causing problems for generations of dragons. He then flicked his tongue out to lick them affectionately.

"That's pretty much it, spies and clergymen," Gabriel said with a grin. "Want to guess which one I am?"

At being licked, Casey pouted mostly for show. It was still weird, but getting more and more normal by the second. Obviously Gabriel wasn't put out by this at all and even with a completely different body Casey could tell it was Gabriel underneath. Something about all that made it hard to even try and keep some kind of mental distance between Gabriel-the-human and Gabriel-the-dragon, not that they actually wanted that. Everything was just coming together so quickly, almost lending credence to the idea that maybe Casey really was a dragonaught.

"Not sure which one would be better," Casey said slowly. Either one could be a compliment or an insult both if Gabriel was copping up to it. "You've obviously got some faith in your history and legends, but on the other hand... you were just kind of at a party for no reason, weren't you?"

Letting out a soft huff at the pout, he gave them another lick, this time more to get them used to it than anything else. After all, it was to his advantage to get Casey used to his dragon self as quickly as humanly possible so that they could continue on with their relationship. He wanted them comfortable again and he was going to do his best to make that happen.

"Even dragons feel like going out and having fun," Gabriel answered with amusement. He had actually gone along to make sure some of the dragonaughts that lived in his building had proper supervision while enjoying the nightlife. "But it doesn't matter. You'll learn about what I do soon enough."

Casey huffed in return, amusement more than anything else now. If Gabriel was going to keep doing that, it would be impossible not to acclimate. It was still a different side to Gabriel, and not one Casey was used to dealing with from a relationship in general. They kind of doubted many people at all were used to it considering the situation.

"Oh?" They blinked in surprise, then reached out to gently hold Gabriel's snout and shake it from side to side. "You ask me to guess and won't give me the answer, huh? I see how it is. To be honest, I thought dragons might have their own parties instead of hanging out with a bunch of us non-draconics."

He was going to keep doing that. At least until Casey holds his snout and shakes it a bit. To that, Gabriel started to hiss playfully, a somewhat frightening sound to anyone not acclimated to dealing with a dragon. He didn't mind the action, but he also liked messing with them more.

"I'm closer to a clergyman than a spy," he answered properly as he moved his head up a bit to rest his snout under their chin and against the front of their neck. "There aren't enough dragons in the city to have our own party and besides, I was more of the designated driver than there to have fun. Which you derailed quite well."

That hissing sound got Casey to tense immediately, a reaction to working with animals often not used to dealing with humans or that otherwise did not take well to strangers handling them when dropped off for whatever reason. There was a moment of pounding worry and terror before it clicked in their head what just happened. Casey frowned and gave a light swat to the top of Gabriel's nose. "Hey," they said, long and playful and mock-scolding for the action.

At Gabriel shifting along them, Casey moved to help them fit even better. Their hand went down to his jaw, stroking gently but firm in the way more-languid animals like cats seemed to adore. It was a natural reaction due to the similar body-types, just a comforting hold and motion, something to keep Gabriel there and with them.

"Designated driver?" they asked, brow furrowing. Learning what Gabriel was of the two options didn't deter them much at all; it was good for someone to have faith, and it obviously wasn't something Gabriel was unreasonably zealous about. It actually made Casey adore him even more for having the dedication. "What happened to the people you were with?"

All he could do at Casey's response was laugh softly. That was a normal reaction from them and a good sign that things were going to be okay between them. The petting was also a good sign as well as he closed his eyes and sighed softly at the action. He had never really been properly petted like this before, having only been given a few headpats by the dragonaughts he knew that were not his own.

"They got home safe," he responded easily to the question. "I think they were glad that I had found somebody to spend time with instead of sitting there and babysitting them for their dragons."

Such a soft sigh from such a powerful creature only served to continue melting Casey's heart. The ease at which Gabriel had already wormed himself into their affections was practically unreal, pleasing in the same measure that it could be nerve-wracking. They didn't stop their motion, instead choosing to relax themselves and get used to the warmth and comfort of how they were right now. Human and dragon, slotting together like puzzle pieces.

"For their dragons," Casey repeated. It took a moment before they uttered a quiet ah? and added, "Their dragons, meaning... dragonaughts? No way."
