The museum had been fantastic. Casey was still getting over how educated and charming Gabriel was, even in the midst of breathtaking art both magical and mundane, they just couldn't take their eyes off him the entire time. It was embarrassing, being caught more than once, but it was hard not to look and be in pleased wonder every time he was still there. This was real and it was all for Casey, and that was something they were going to cherish for a very long time. This was one of their first dates after the fateful party where they'd met and yet... walking down the road, hand-in-hand, making their way to dinner as the sun gave way to dazzling stars and galaxies residing beyond...

It felt only natural.

Thoughts going into far too sappy a direction, Casey raised their free hand and covered their mouth to prevent the smile trying to blossom. Oh, Gabriel was definitely going to think they were going too far, too fast, too swept off their feet. They had to be missing something somewhere. If they could just keep following the right steps a little while longer before Gabriel caught on to how clueless they were about all this, then... then maybe they could make it real. Fake it until you make it.

"I'm having fun," they said, more of a murmur considering their hand was still trying to stifle the smile. "I hope you are, too. Are you?"

"Guilty as charged." Gods, they were absolutely beautiful like that. To be perfectly honest, they were always incredibly beautiful to Gabriel, so this wasn't exactly a change for him when it came to thinking about them. This was different because Gabriel caused this and that was why it was so wonderful to him.

He was still eating the ice cream and giving them a bit of a show, but it was definitely toned down from before. It was obvious that Gabriel was having fun doing this, teasing Casey and giving them a bit of a show that was only for them and them alone. "You seem to be enjoying it, though."

For the continued act, lessened though it was, Casey reached up to tilt the ice cream away and steal more of it from Gabriel before letting him continue. "Enjoying, maybe, but are you even tasting the ice cream like that?"

It would be a shame to let good ice cream go to waste just for a show, after all. Casey was more a fan of butter pecan or cookie dough, but vanilla was good, too. Maybe next time they went out, it could be for ice cream in the park or something... with or without a show.

Casey sat back and watched the show for a bit longer before they couldn't take it any longer and looked down at their hands instead. "You're gonna be the death of me, Gabriel," they complained in good nature. He was just far too gorgeous, obviously doing this for Casey's benefit alone, so they couldn't be too upset about it. Still, he went pretty fast considering how long they'd really known each other for.

"Of course I am. It's why I came here instead of somewhere else. They have excellent ice cream," he said with a mock insulted look on his face before it turned back into a smile and he continued eating it without putting on a show. If Casey wasn't going to watch him, then he was going to eat it normally.

After a moment of that, he held the cone out for Casey and looked at them. Sure, he had won the race, but that didn't mean he wasn't going to share his ice cream properly. "Now that I'm done teasing you, do you want to actually have some of it? I think we've had enough messing around for the moment."

Casey looked up at the offer, some surprise on their face, before it shifted into a shy smile and they averted their eyes again. Of course he wasn't going to just crow in the victory all night. Because this was Gabriel Logan who apparently had been hand-carved by the gods themselves and dropped onto this world for the express purpose of flustering one Casey Albright Ramone.

"Sure," they said, scooting to get their chairs closer. They watched Gabriel for a moment, then took hold of his hand to keep it steady and licked off some of the ice cream for themselves. No show to be had here, not yet, not while they were still het up themselves.

Gabriel didn't really expect a show and was content to just watch Casey eating the ice cream. He was having a good night out, spending time with the person he loved and hoping that they were having as good a time as he was, all teasing aside.

"What do you think? It's pretty good when I'm not teasing you with it, isn't it?" It may have only been vanilla, but it was good vanilla and it was the reason why he had gone here. He wasn't going to suffer in his teasing, after all.

Face turning a bit red at the reminder of the teasing, Casey pulled back and licked any remaining ice cream off their lips before answering. "It is good. Didn't realize this place was anything to write home about," they said thoughtfully. "Is it just ice cream here, or do they make anything else?"

They hadn't really been paying attention, not with the mischief Gabriel had clearly been up to when they got there. Maybe it would be a nice place to return to at a later date, or at least stop in once or twice to get a better feel for it. No harm in that, right? It didn't really matter besides; Casey was just hoping to talk to Gabriel more, lure more conversation, just for the sake of keeping the date going that little bit longer. They were having a rather good night, all told.

"Just ice cream," he responded as he took the cone back to eat some more of it before holding it back out for Casey. It was nice just talking while sharing an ice cream cone. Though, if Gabriel was being honest, it was like one of those human romance movies he watched to try to figure out how to actually woo Casey properly.

"I don't come here often," Gabriel said as he just looked over at Casey, watching them like they were the most important thing in the world. "I'm not a big fan of frozen foods. I like hot things more actually, temperature-wise and spice, but sometimes you have to have some sweets, right?"

"They make hot sweets too," Casey said with a quirk of their brow. The ice cream was being held out for them and it would just be rude not to accept the offer. They took another large lick, working their lips over it to pull more ice cream in at once. Let Gabriel sit on that while they got to have more of the treat.

"Like cookies or brownies, especially if you warm them up before hand," they continued. "I'm sure there's spicy sweet out there, too. It isn't really my flavor, though."

Oh. Gabriel couldn't help but stare at Casey when they did that, looking absolutely distracted from the conversation for a moment. That would be unfair if not for the fact that Gabriel had been basically teasing them for most of their time in the shop. He only got the tail end of what they were saying and he had to try to figure out what they had been talking about. Sweets? Yes, that was it. Possibly.

"Well, it's still good even if it isn't my favorite?" Yeah, he totally got himself back without seeming like he has no clue what they're talking about anymore. Good job, Gabriel. You're so good at this. "I know there's a bakery a few blocks away that's pretty good too. Nothing spicy there, though."

Casey couldn't really hide the smirk at the obvious distraction. They may have lacked social skills or an iron nerve, but they weren't stupid and Gabriel was obviously not going to get away with that show he had put on. For now, however, there was ice cream to eat and a date to finish. It could wait until another time.

"Show me your favorite sometime," they requested. Spice wasn't too bad, and it would be interesting to see what Gabriel was more into than a classic like ice cream. "Even if it isn't sweet."

He had to huff at Casey's smirk, not really at all bothered by it. It was actually a good thing that they were getting him back, even in that small way, because that meant that they could stand up to him and mess around with him back without being intimidated. He liked that.

"I will," he said with a grin. "But I'll warn you, it's not for the faint of heart."

Their date continued on the same note. It was an eventful one, yet nothing actually out of the ordinary when it came to Gabriel. The man didn't seem to know much in the way of low key or aloof; Casey enjoyed every moment of it, even if some of the boundless energy was unfathomable to them. It was just a case of opposites attracting in a near-unbelievable way. To think that they could have possibly missed meeting each other, fate or not... well, Casey didn't actually want to think about that.

It was a few weeks later when Casey had invited Gabriel over to their place for dinner. Nothing especially fancy, but it was home-cooked and another step entirely to invite him into their home. After introducing him to the animals and dinner, they'd sat and watched movies and talked into the night, so late that all but the expensive taxicabs had stopped running. Being the polite person that they were, Casey had offered to let Gabriel sleep in their bed — not on the couch, lest the ninja cat jump on his face continually in the night. Casey had that experience when first bringing her home, foolishly leaving the bedroom door open in a perfect opening for divebombs.

All of that said, they both slept soundly. Nothing happened. Just a good evening turned into a good night and what Casey had expected would be a good morning. When they opened their eyes, however, it was to a blue loaf-y lump laying across their chest and snoring away softly. Uncomprehending, Casey's first thought was that a lizard had somehow gotten in through an open window or cracked door before their mind began to clear; the weight of the lump was too heavy to be a mere lizard, and the snoring was too sentient, to boot. Their vision cleared and it soon became apparent just what was going on.

That was definitely, absolutely a dragon sleeping on Casey. Which made absolutely no sense because there were hardly any dragons in the city, period, much less a dragon that would break in in the middle of the night to fall asleep on a random citydweller with four animals and another human in the apartment and—it just didn't make sense.

"Dragon?" they murmured, trying to piece everything together. Where had it even come from? "Dra... dragon. Dragon! What?!"

Gabriel usually had better control over his form, keeping himself from changing while sleeping after years of practice in case of an emergency where he couldn't make his way back somewhere safe to sleep, but Casey being what they were made him relax just enough that he changed back in his sleep. It was nice just sleeping with his dragonaught that he didn't even notice the fact that he had changed.

At least until he was pulled out of his sleep by hearing Casey mention something about dragons. Brown eyes opened wide to stare at them in confusion for a moment before he pulled back and studied himself to realize that yes, he had changed back into his proper form at some point during the night.

"Surprise?" His voice was deeper with a bit of a rumble to it, but it was still close enough to his human voice to be recognizable.

Casey felt something leap into their throat at the voice. It was Gabriel. This dragon was Gabriel and their brain was having a very difficult time getting that fact to work right in their brain. How? Why? Since when? What?

"You're not a dragon," Casey said, plain and confused. Their boyfriend was most definitely humanoid, more specifically human. How was there a dragon here sitting on their bed using their boyfriend's voice and seeming only sheepish rather than confused or agitated or—it was still not quite processing. "Gabriel, you're human."

Maybe he hadn't noticed yet.

Maybe the truth was too much for them, Gabriel considered for a moment as he studied Casey. This was a very specific denial about how he wasn't a dragon despite him laying right there in full draconic glory. Moving forward a bit, Gabriel bumped his snout firmly against Casey's chest as if to give them physical proof that he was indeed a dragon and not a human like previously believed.

"As you can quite clearly see, I am a dragon," he said clearly, looking up at him as if that fact was obvious. "The human you thought as me is merely a form I can take to blend in among your kind. I'm sorry I had to deceive you like that."

It was just such a large shock after waking up in relative ease and comfort and closeness, something so completely out of the realm of Casey's imagination. Who seriously wouldn't have a hard time working around their significant other changing species overnight? There was a lot going on in Casey's head, but they immediately latched on, arms wrapping around the back of Gabriel's jaw and his neck as if to hold him there and close once he nudged them.

This was still Gabriel, even if it was all incomprehensible. They closed their eyes and slowed their breathing, taking in the stronger but same scent of the man before them. Voice was the same save for the draconic rumble deep inside his throat. His human face had only been... a fake? A form to take?

Brows furrowing, they held on tighter in a more comfortable grip before shifting to pull back and look Gabriel in his dragony face. It was new, but not, and confusing all the while. "Why? I don't understand... any of this..."

Well, Gabriel was going to do his best to not push them faster than they could handle as they dealt with the fact that their boyfriend has been revealed to be a dragon. Allowing them to latch onto his head, he merely flicked his tongue out to better get a sense of them than what he could gather as a human.

"What do you want me to explain first?" His voice was soft and expression gentle as he stared at Casey while they looked at him. He wanted this to go well and for them to still want to be with him after this. "You deserve some answers."

Seeing Gabriel stick his tongue out, even if they theoretically knew that dragons had better sense of their surroundings through taste and scent than most species, was kind of adorable. Casey couldn't help but twitch their lips up into a smile at the sight. What else could they do, really? The world had just done a rather large turn on its head with the information that a humanoid had actually been a dragon hiding in plain sight.

"Why hide? No one is afraid of dragons," they said slowly, in a tone that meant the social context. Respect for their abilities was different. It was entirely possible for dragons to live in sentient society in current days even if many chose not to. Or did they? "Wait, is this... something every dragon can do?"

That just made the whole thing even more confusing. Their hold tightened as Casey curled up more around Gabriel, this new and different Gabriel that was still warm and reassuring and there.

Now that's what he wanted to see, a smile on their face. That was better than the outright denial from earlier and a sign that maybe things could turn out well for the two of them. Tongue still out to scent and taste Casey so that he could know them properly, his ears twitched a bit as he thought about the questions posed to him.

"We don't like the attention," he started, adjusting his body slightly to make himself more comfortable in Casey's hold, not wanting to move from their grasp on him. "And yes, every dragon can change forms and is trained to do so in case we have to go into humanoid cities."

Casey watched the tongue still out and sensing and resisted the urge to tap it like they would with a dog or cat that had forgotten to pull it back into their mouths. Gabriel definitely wasn't an animal and shouldn't be treated like one... but he definitely was gorgeous regardless of form. They weren't used to seeing dragons in general, so maybe it was the exoticism speaking? Hard to say when they were still just taking in the whole situation.

"Are dragons not as prideful as everyone says?" That was the only logical conclusion. If dragons didn't like the attention, then they must have been very shy and used the reputation to their advantage. "But... but you're dating me. Isn't that weird? Most people think it's weird."

After a bit of tasting the air around them, Gabriel extended his tongue out further to lightly lick their skin for a second before he pulled his tongue back into his mouth completely. He was trying to take things slow with them and this might not be the best time to learn more about them in his dragon form.

"We are, but when you live as long as we can, having that much attention can be a bother than an ego booster." There was more to it than that, but dragons were secluded for their own reasons that Gabriel knew that Casey wasn't ready to learn quite yet. "If you were a normal humanoid, it would be weird, but you're not normal."

At the light lick to their face, Casey blinked widely and tilted their head. That was a bit odd, not something they would have expected, but... this was still their boyfriend. Just their boyfriend being a dragon which was apparently not weird at all even if it was the strangest thing that had ever happened in their life. So, Gabriel was a dragon and dragons didn't like prolonged attention even if they wanted everyone to know them as properly powerful... so they simply didn't appear at all in order to watch their legacy from the shadows? It still wasn't quite adding up.

You're not normal hit somewhere Gabriel had likely not even been aiming at all. It was a confused teenager, a wondering adult, a messed-up student, all wrapped up into one wondering what they were if not like anyone else. There were some others out there with similar thoughts and feelings, sure, but nothing in personal experience and that didn't mean it was normal, did it? Casey couldn't help the flinch and tilted their gaze away, past Gabriel's snout and crown and looking all the way down to his fluffed tail where it lay among the sheets. "M-maybe not, but you said... you didn't mind," Casey said. Sorting through the sudden rush of confusion and emotions was not easy. "The not-normal."

"What are you even--" Oh. Were they talking about the gender thing? Gabriel looked confused for a moment as he thought about it and tried to process just how that could have been mixed up. "I'm talking about your soul, not your humanoid gender thing. Is that not normal to humanoids? I thought it was."

As if to get their attention, he flicked his tail a bit before it moved to wrap itself around their waist and pull them close as Gabriel sat up and started to nose around their neck. "You're familiar with the term dragonaught, right?"

That was... okay, that was a surprise. Not what Gabriel was talking about? Although, come to think of it, it definitely was a humanoid condition. No other species had documented cases of it thus far. Whether that was due to societal taboos from mentioning it or humanoids simply developing differently thanks to their numbers and varied lifestyles all coming together was impossible to say. Since Gabriel was actually a dragon, that he might not understand was... weirdly okay. He didn't see any difference.

"It really isn't," they said, tone lifting in surprise at the motion to pull them closer together. Their arms shifted as Gabriel lifted and shifted to start sniffing around, just firm enough to not be tickling but close enough that Casey was sure they were about to start giggling any second. "B-but, um, yes... Dragonaughts are the people who use multiple elements. They're also—"

Casey trailed off, eyes going wide and body tensing minutely. Draconic soulmates.

It was very noticeable to Gabriel when Casey tensed up and he moved from their neck for a moment to lick their cheek affectionately before returning to snuffling around, going from their neck to under one of their arms, snout going straight into their armpit. He wanted to learn every bit about them as quickly as possible so that he felt more comfortable with them.

"Our soulmates, yes," he confirmed, his voice slightly muffled by his snout being pressed against their body and inhaling their scent. "You're mine. I knew from the moment I met you that you were mine. That's why you're not normal. You're a dragonaught."
