The museum had been fantastic. Casey was still getting over how educated and charming Gabriel was, even in the midst of breathtaking art both magical and mundane, they just couldn't take their eyes off him the entire time. It was embarrassing, being caught more than once, but it was hard not to look and be in pleased wonder every time he was still there. This was real and it was all for Casey, and that was something they were going to cherish for a very long time. This was one of their first dates after the fateful party where they'd met and yet... walking down the road, hand-in-hand, making their way to dinner as the sun gave way to dazzling stars and galaxies residing beyond...

It felt only natural.

Thoughts going into far too sappy a direction, Casey raised their free hand and covered their mouth to prevent the smile trying to blossom. Oh, Gabriel was definitely going to think they were going too far, too fast, too swept off their feet. They had to be missing something somewhere. If they could just keep following the right steps a little while longer before Gabriel caught on to how clueless they were about all this, then... then maybe they could make it real. Fake it until you make it.

"I'm having fun," they said, more of a murmur considering their hand was still trying to stifle the smile. "I hope you are, too. Are you?"

It had been a lovely time so far and Gabriel didn't see that changing anytime soon. He enjoyed just even being around Casey, so it was going to be incredibly difficult to make this turn towards the worse, especially since both of them seemed incredibly enamored with each other. To Gabriel, having Casey with him felt right and he knew that he had chosen correctly the first time that they met.

There was a hint of amusement at Casey trying to hide their smile and glancing over at him. How could he not notice when Gabriel was doing the same thing as them, always looking at them and hiding his smile, though he had a far better poker face than Casey did. With a light squeeze of Casey's hand, Gabriel's amusement turned into a smile.

"I'm having fun," he replied, definitely sounding like he was happy and just genuinely enjoying the night with them. "I'm glad I wasn't boring you with all that history talk at the museum. I tend to go a bit overboard sometimes."

"Boring?" Casey startled, looking up at Gabriel in surprise. If Gabriel thought his talking had been boring, had he thought the invitation in the first place was simply something to appease him rather than Casey's own interests? "No, it was great, I promise. History fascinates me, just how much people can go through and what different times can do to our creative output. Just think, the same genius could be born in a different time and their art would probably be completely different."

It was a common thought of Casey's. What would life be like in another time, another place, somewhere different. Would they be the same person or was their life shaped by their experiences instead? Hard to say and one they could never really find a satisfying conclusion for. Of course, there were plenty of theories and studies on the idea of souls recycling throughout time but the only real conclusion anyone could come to was that it was a mystery. No magic or science existed that could identify one soul from another so specifically and the sheer magnitude of such an experiment made it no more than a theological brainteaser for any but the most avid researcher. Or a dragon. Not that Casey looked too far into the study, really, they had merely looked up the public opinion one such thoughts once and that was all they really needed to decide it was better left for idle daydreams.

"Regardless," they said after a moment of drifting through their thoughts and almost losing track of the conversation. "Um. Regardless... you told me a lot of new things today, and I like that. I've always liked that place but now it's even better."

"Well, I didn't really mean the subject so much as how it was presented," he explained with amusement in his voice. It was obvious that he was glad that they shared interests with each other since that was a very good sign for their future. "I've been told that I have the tendency to ramble on like a very dull professor."

With his free hand, he gestured outwards in front of both of them as he started to speak again. "But history's our guide to moving forward and expanding itself. Seeing what those that came before us accomplished, well, it's inspiring. Almost makes you want to go out and do something crazy to make your own mark on the world, doesn't it?" His head turned up to the sky and he watched the stars starting to glitter brightly. "Nothing ridiculous, mind you, but something people could look back on and think as fondly about as everything we saw in the museum."

Casey wasn't sure about the whole historic celebrity thing. It was a nice thought, and they found themselves leaning in to Gabriel's side as if to hide from any other eyes trying to look at the both of them. Their grip tightened on his hand and they mumbled, "I think if just one person would think back fondly on me, that would be enough."

Maybe not the best in front of crowds of people as the center of attention, that Casey Albright. Not alone, anyway, and definitely not without a very concrete reason of their own making. "Which probably sounds really lame," Casey added after a moment of thought. Something closer to shooting down what Gabriel had suggested which really hadn't been the intention at all. They would much rather have Gabriel remember them in a good light than a hundred-thousand strangers they'd never met before. "And, no, your presentation wasn't like an old professor. Not a boring one, anyway."

Well, Gabriel was a dragon and dragons sure did love the idea of living on in some way or another. Being remembered for times past their death was the greatest feat of proving themselves better than the others of their time and dragons had a big enough ego to try and outdo both their own generation and the ones that came before. As the saying goes, there is nothing more powerful than a dragon's ego.

Reaching out to cup Casey's cheek with his free hand, Gabriel smiled gently at them. "I don't think anything of the sort. In fact, I think it's quite sweet and hope you'll allow me to be the one to think of you fondly."

There was a quiet, meek noise at the hand up to their cheek. Casey wasn't quite expecting that and it was a more than welcome motion, their automatic reaction being to bring their free hand to cover their mouth... but Gabriel's hand was in the way and they just ended up hanging their hand over his wrist while their face turned redder and redder for the attention. This guy knew how to say just the right thing and Casey didn't doubt the sincerity for a moment.

"Yeah. I'd like that. But—" They paused, realization hitting them all over again. This was real. For some unfathomable and miraculous reason, Gabriel really was interested in Casey and it was all Casey could do to accept that fact and try to reciprocate as much as they were able. Gabriel had to know how they felt, too, even if they weren't so great at expressing it, right? "But that means we've got to keep sticking together. So you'll know what you're thinking about."

Seeing Casey react so obviously to his affection was a wonderful thing and Gabriel was glad that their hand couldn't cover their beautiful face once again. They were beautiful and Gabriel wanted to do nothing but look at and hold and touch and be with Casey for the rest of their life. Even now, so early in the relationship as they were, Gabriel knew Casey was his chosen one and that they were meant to be together. All he needed to do was make sure Casey knew that this was the reality of the situation.

"From where I'm standing, I don't see us drifting apart," he said before leaning towards them and kissing them gently on the lips, eyes staring directly into Casey's while he did. When he ended the kiss, Gabriel stayed intimately close, still looking at Casey like they were the most precious and beautiful person in the world. "I want to be with you as long as you'll allow me to, Casey."

Oh gods, their face must have been so red by now. Casey couldn't even imagine what looking at them would be like right now aside from probably embarrassing by proxy. The date hadn't even been finished and Casey was already the happiest they could imagine being all night. Was that a good sign or a bad one?

Staring into Gabriel's eyes during the kiss, they couldn't help their eyes fluttering before sighing softly when he pulled away. Looking away was impossible, not with those gorgeous eyes watching him with so much adoration. Unfamiliar as it was, Casey selfishly wanted more of it. Soft breaths, cool when compared to the warmth of the man in front of them, mingled in the air between. "We don't even really know each other yet," Casey pointed out, more for the sake of practicality than really trying to drive Gabriel away. Doing that just seemed too cruel. At the same time, Casey hadn't really made their gender orientation obvious aside from some blatant metrosexuality which could be attributed to a number of different things. It was hard to admit right off, especially with someone who looked at you as if you were perfect.

"So practical. I like that." It wasn't a lie either. Gabriel was old enough to know that he had his faults and having someone like Casey as his chosen, someone that could balance his draconic passion and fire with the stability of the humanoids's earth, was absolutely perfect for him. He needed someone that was his equal and even now he could spot that Casey was going to be a good balance for him. "That's why we're here, isn't it? To spend time together and learn more about each other."

What Casey didn't know yet and was definitely going to find out soon enough was that no matter what they would tell him, Gabriel would still think they were perfect. They were his chosen, the one soul that would resonate with his own for eternity, so of course they were perfect for him, no matter what. They were already different species to begin with and that was usually the biggest problem while dating, though Gabriel hasn't told Casey the truth yet. He wants to confirm that yes, Casey does feel the same way he feels.

There were a lot of things Casey had seen in life. People dating outside of their species wasn't unheard of, but also wasn't something Casey had really thought about for themselves, either. As far as Casey was concerned, they weren't anything particularly special for a humanoid; smart, funny and shy were good traits but also a dime-a-dozen in the species. Anyone looking for an interspecies romance would find much more exciting prospects elsewhere. That didn't bother them, though, things were perfectly fine as they were. Gabriel was particularly fine as he was and Casey couldn't find themselves wanting for anything more, either. What else could they ask for aside from handsome, romantic, intelligent, charming and actually interested in Casey?

Not much, really.

"Yes," Casey said, head tilting to the side to glance around Gabriel only for a brief moment. That was a good reminder for where exactly they were and where they'd both been heading. "Although here could also mean the restaurant. You're still, um, hungry, right? Actually hungry?"

"I'm still actually hungry, don't you worry," Gabriel responded with a soft laugh. As a dragon, he had to eat far more than a human would and he was aware of the fact that eating at a restaurant wouldn't sate his hunger completely. Casey didn't need to know that though, as they still believed that they were on a date with a normal humanoid instead of someone of another species.

"I just got distracted by you, that's all," he said as he finally moved enough away from Casey to start walking again. Sure, his mind was filled with the need to just hold them close and kiss them for as long as possible, but that wasn't the plan for tonight. Dinner and then maybe Gabriel can be a gentleman and walk Casey home and possibly get one last kiss in?

Casey tried not to be too obvious when they stayed closer to Gabriel than before despite the fact that it made walking just that much trickier. It was a fine price to pay for staying next to the incredibly cozy furnace that was Gabriel. Was it all those layers he wore? Casey wasn't sure, but the allure simply for the contact was definitely there. Although they weren't thinking nearly as far ahead as Gabriel, they were still thinking about what to do once they got to the restaurant. It wasn't something overly fancy. Would that be a problem? Should they have gone all the way and gotten a reservation with somewhere fancy, or would that have been too presumptuous for having known each other for such a short time?

"Distraction is okay," they said, a bit quiet but with more confidence than before. This was still something they were struggling with and trying to overcome for Gabriel's sake during the date. It wasn't his fault he was dating someone with some impressive self-confidence issues. "Do you know what you're looking forward to? This place has a little of everything, I like trying something new every time."

The heat that Gabriel gave off wasn't because of his many layers of clothes, but instead the natural heat of his body. Dragons were of fire, after all, and burned hotter than the other species. It meant that Gabriel was definitely good at snuggling on cold nights. Or any nights, really. Dragons are naturally very cuddly for egotistical flying fire-breathing death creatures.

"Good, because you're a wonderful distraction." He wouldn't mind getting distracted by him some more, but his mind had already jumped tracks to food and he was thinking about what he was going to get from the restaurant. "I don't know. I'm quite a fan of red meat, but outside of that, I'm not really picky. What would you suggest?"

Dragons were also the most apparently-reclusive species and difficult for people to truly know or understand. Rumors ran more rampant than actual knowledge; schools often taught less documented fact and more historical stories and mythology about the draconic races much to the interest of most students. Romanticizing them for being egotistical flying fire-breathing death creatures was surprisingly common, and maybe more accurate than was precedented.

"Hm, meat?" Casey hummed in thought, hand reaching up to rub at the edge of their chin while considering what might please someone who enjoyed meat as the primary part of their dish. "They have this sizzlin' salad that's a lot of thin beef strips with plenty of toppings that I liked... Oh, but you should still look at the menu first before deciding."

To be perfectly honest, dragons loved their reclusive status and took advantage of the fact that they only let their dragonauts close to filter out the rumors that were spread across the world. It made blending in with the rest of the population easier when dragons ventured out in the world in the humanoid forms they could take. Nobody expects a person to be a dragon when nobody knows that dragons can hide their form.

"I will, but I value your opinion as well," Gabriel said with a soft smile. It was always smart to ask the person who had been their before about the menu before trying things and he was a very smart dragon.

Casey hummed, pleased by the response, and shifted while walking alongside Gabriel. They lifted their intertwined hands and brought it over their own head, essentially rearranging the taller of the two to have his arm over Casey's shoulder, then let go with that hand and snaked up their other hand to hold him instead. This would make leaning and walking at the same time much easier. Not quite sure if that was how Gabriel wanted to do it, they looked up at him to judge his reaction to the motion.

"Yeah," they said. "I'm glad. Um. Is this okay, Gabriel?"

When he feels his arm move, Gabriel looks to see what's going on, but makes no move to stop it, instead allowing Casey to move his arm into a better position for them. He doesn't mind it all, Casey moving his arm around like that. Instead, he's glad for it because it shows just how much they want to be close to him and he would never have issues with that.

"It's more than okay," he responded with a smile before he leaned over and kissed their cheek. "I like it. Makes you nice and close to me."

"You're just the right height for it," Casey said in an almost-embarrassed mumble. The kiss was good even if it was chaste and brief, just more affection to add onto the pile slowly warming Casey's heart into a blaze. Could this man get any better? Casey tilted their head and kissed at Gabriel's jaw where they could reach without getting on tiptoes. Not exactly the best idea while they were still trying to walk.

"Gods," they said, louder and more confident this time once they settled back into the comfortable position. "If I hadn't gone to that party, we wouldn't even be here right now. It was a touch-and-go thing, did you know that?"

"If that's the case, then you're the right height to take advantage of it." They were cute with that mumbling of their words. And that kiss on the jaw, if Gabriel wanted to be completely honest. It was distracting and Gabriel had to keep thinking to himself that they were going to dinner.

"Maybe it was fate," Gabriel said thoughtfully at the idea of it. Of course it was fate, Casey was his dragonaught and soulmate. They were destined to meet. "It's possible that even if we hadn't met at the party, we would have still found each other."

"Do you believe in fate?" With so many species and races, religion was generally just accepted as something for their own peoples; good will to be shared and hope for the future in a way that was satisfying to their sensibilities. It was definitely a largely-growing public interest with the merging of cultures now becoming commonplace and the species starting to learn more and more about each other. Some races were even adopting the faiths of others out of preference or better alignment or to try something new. It was an interesting conversation topic and not one particularly taboo. Practically speaking, Casey had no faith in higher powers but in the spirits of nature and the world protecting them as the sentients made their own decisions and forged forward through history. "I've never really given it serious thought before."

That much was true. Casey had other things to worry about and feeling as if some great and powerful force was guiding their entire life wasn't exactly the best and probably wouldn't help their fragile coping mechanisms. Having someone to blame, in this case, didn't seem worth whatever other comfort might be derived from it. "Oh, but, I—some people are uncomfortable talking about that, so it's no pressure."

"Don't worry, I don't have any problems talking about my beliefs." As a dragon, he had problems talking about his belief system, but what the dragons took as fact was not exactly what Gabriel believed personally. It wouldn't cause too much trouble if he spoke what he believed to Casey.

"I think that there are times where two people are meant to meet and nothing can stop that from happening," he started calmly, focus all on Casey as he spoke. "I believe that's what happened between us. From what I've seen and how I feel myself, I know that the two of us were meant to meet and that we were destined to be together like this."

"Meant to meet doesn't mean meant to be together," Casey said, again with the pragmatism. It was an interesting idea that even if their lives weren't predestined, there might be some people just too important to go without encountering. Sort of a guideline rather than a hard rule, and if such a thing really existed, they wouldn't mind if Gabriel had been chosen just for them. It took some of the charm out of a whirlwind romance, yet still held the allure of finding the perfect place to belong.

Okay, so maybe Casey was beginning to understand why people found such beliefs appealing. It still wasn't their thing, but it was making more sense now with Gabriel here as an example.

Head tilted back to rest against the arm around their shoulders, Casey mused. "You know, anyone listening to you right now would think we're already married or in a more serious relationship, at the least. You talk really heavy," they said, teasing replacing what probably should have been admonishment in the tone.

"Ah, but that meeting sparked a connection between us. Can't you feel it? It's pulling us together and keeping us close." Tilting his head towards Casey's, he smiled. His dear little Casey, always so pragmatic. He still enjoyed that part of them. "I've seen how you look at me and I feel the same. You never have to hide that from me, you know."

His head moved back into its upright position as he thought about Casey's comment. Was it too much? He had never really been in this sort of relationship before, what with the fact that he'd never run into what he thought was his dragonaught before. "If you want, I'll try to tone it down. I've never really been with someone quite like you before."

"Oh." Casey once again felt the heat of a blush spread across their face and they tilted their head to hide it along Gabriel's side, momentary embarrassment taking over. Still with the heavy, to-the-point talk that was all too refreshing in its honesty. Casey appreciated it more than they could say, and yet still wasn't used to the sort of things Gabriel was being honest about. "You saw me looking?"

Perhaps not the best way to admit Gabriel was correct, but there was no use denying it if he really had noticed. Whatever the case, he didn't seem anything close to torn up about it and wanted to encourage it instead. This puppy love, an instant attraction, the very spark Gabriel was talking about. Both of them wanted it. It was still going to take an adjustment period. "No one is quite like anyone else. I-it's, uh... I'm just not used to it."

"I did. I think you look cute when you're embarrassed like that." He took his hand and moved it so that he could tilt Casey's head so that Gabriel could see their face properly. Even with their face reddened with a blush, he still thought that they were beautiful. "You can look at me as much as you want. I don't mind one bit. In fact, it makes me happy that you like to look at me so much."

There was a soft laugh and a thoughtful expression on Gabriel's face as he listened to Casey. "Well, you're right about that. I will try to tone it down for you until you get used to me. Will that work for you?"
