Souls abide to an Endless desire. [ psl ]

WHO Shannon Vaughn ([personal profile] privatematter), Eli Delacroix ([personal profile] aspectional).
WHAT Meet cute. This may or may not be a Loveless fusion.
WHEN 1984. Shannon is 7 28, Eli is 19.
WHERE Chicago, [wherever their region is, I don't remember. We totally figured it out once, though].

The scene was not pretty. Shannon couldn't see it, strictly speaking, but he had been given the brief and knew what had happened. He could smell the copper on the air and it rested like lead on his tongue no matter what he did. That was always how it was when dealing with a murder; the taste lasted for days, sometimes even after the case was closed. It never let him forget what they were dealing with, and while Shannon Vaughn was not the most compassionate man on earth, he felt anger bubble up inside of him whenever he was confronted with one human killing another for some petty reason or another. It was always petty when measured up to the price of another human life.

Then again, it was part of the job. He enjoyed his work, enjoyed (most of) the people he worked with, and he did his part of the job well. Catching the sons of bitches who thought they could shatter peace with no consequence, that their wills were above those of everyone around them, that last moment at the end of the day where the war was not given up and evil had not won, was worth it. His parents didn't really understand why Shannon had wanted to work with the police when he had so many other options, things that weren't so limited by his abnormality. His blindness. That was exactly why he did it, though, the satisfaction of not letting anything get in the way of feeling right. When it came down to it, Shannon just wanted others to feel safe. His part of the work now entailed checking in with any witnesses who had heard the fight in the alley, the screams as the mugger brought out the knife. Thank God for tape recorders, or it may have taken even longer than his seven years tenure to be allowed to take witness statements without any way to officially keep it on record.

He was walking the perimeter now, ears at half-mast while he kept his head tilted and tried to make any heads or tails of the gossip around him, see if maybe anyone had been holding out or noticed something without realizing what they had seen. Lacey was waiting by the truck, drinking from her bowl after escorting Shannon all around the scene while the actual cops had set up. The body was still in the alley and the investigators were crowding around and making it near-impossible for onlookers to get a peek. With the POLICE jacket and his glasses on, Shannon knew he cut an official-looking figure, if incredibly young thanks to his ears, and not the blind police aide that had never attended any sort of law enforcement academy. Now it was up to Shannon to head off any questions or make any statements requested while the officers did their work.

"And what makes you think what I said wasn't a joke?" His tone was light and somewhat teasing, so it's obvious that he wasn't being serious about it. If he was, there would have definitely been a moment of continuing the discussion and being far more heated about it than he was. "Something like that. A prize for getting to know me better, let's say."

He automatically shrugged despite knowing that Shannon couldn't see and let out a soft laugh of amusement. "I live with a Pulitzer winner, so it's not like I'm not used to tough competition, even if this isn't it. I'll take this as a compliment though."

"What can I say, I think highly of myself." It's as upbeat and cheerful as he normally is and doesn't seem to be taking it as an insult. He was interested in Shannon's looks originally, ears not included, but he was starting to like the guy that made up the attractive shell as well. Eli was genuinely curious about this blind man who worked for the police and wanted to get to know him better.

There was another shrug, the rustle of clothes obvious with the motion. "Something like that."

"Most reporters miss the fact that their popularity hangs on the readers," he said. It was a simple enough concept that really seemed to be something some reporters couldn't really grasp. "I'm not one of them. If my articles don't win me awards, that's fine. As long as people enjoy what I write, I won't mind."

There was a soft snort of amusement and Eli crossed his arms to look at him. "I doubt a Pulizter is in the near future for me, but I wouldn't minds a follow up with you. I'll call you tomorrow and we can make plans for another chat, hopefully without an interruption."

"Glad to hear what you actually do, Mr. Vaughn," Eli said cheerfully from the other end. It really did seem like upbeat was his default mode and that he wasn't going to hide it for any reason. Not that it was obvious, but he had been looking forward to the chance to call him up after talking the previous day. "So I was wondering about that follow up interview you promised me yesterday. Do you have any free time later today?"

It wasn't just that he was happy to potentially go and see him again, but work was driving Eli up the wall today. With deadlines for important articles coming up and his boss lurking over everyone's shoulders to make sure they weren't slacking off, Eli was looking for a way out that didn't seem like an excuse. If Shannon met up with him to talk, then he wouldn't get in trouble nor would he have to deal with his boss' wrath for not having written anything yet.

Shannon may not be smitten, but Eli certainly was, though he was trying his best to be professional over the phone. If he was going to flirt with him, it'd be in person, not separated from each other like this. But that was getting ahead of himself and he needed to focus on the here and now, where there was no flirting and purely professional interest in the case currently being investigated.

"Yeah, like calling you up and you telling me," he pointed out with some amusement in his voice. Sure, he could've looked it up and been a borderline stalker about things, but he preferred to not creep people out and honestly he just wanted to talk to him anyway. "There's a pretty decent coffee shop a couple blocks from your precinct that we can meet up at."

"Easy way, direct way, whatever you want to call it. I don't like beating around the bush and would rather just hack away at it with a machete." That metaphor was probably getting away from him, but that was just how Eli was. Sure, he was a reporter and that meant he was good at words, but in normal conversation he tended to get a bit overboard and sometimes lose the meaning of things when he got too worked up emotionally.

"Yeah, I've got an address for it," he said before rattling it off for him. "If you have too much trouble with the location, ask Officer Vasquez. He knows where it's at."

"Don't have the outfit and rugged looks to be Indiana Jones, unfortunately," he said with a somewhat dramatic sigh added on. Shannon was amusing and Eli couldn't help but grin even if he was still at work and trying to hide from his boss' wrath. It would be well worth the punishment though and he'd take it.

"No, I know him from outside of work. He helped me and my dad out a while back." He might not like the Aspects, but he wasn't going to deny knowing them. Besides, Javier was definitely the lesser of two evils when it came to dealing with him and Matheus. At least Javier wasn't a complete and utter dick that Eli wanted beat to a bloody pulp.

"It matters to me. I can't compete with Harrison Ford," replied Eli with a very noticeable pout in his voice. It didn't sound very serious because he wasn't trying to be. Of course, normally it was difficult for Eli to be very serious if he didn't have to be. That was something Shannon was going to learn about him very quickly.

"You're not the first person to tell me that." Considering he was found next to a headstone that was impossible to exist, being called a mystery wasn't much a surprise to him. In fact, he would have been surprised if Shannon thought he know him already. "Maybe I'll tell you more about me."

"I'm not that young," he protested in slight annoyance. Ever since he was adopted, his age was always something he had to defend, having always looked younger than he actually was, even after he hit puberty and finally grew. Part of that might have been why he lost his ears when he did instead of waiting.

"I'd like to test that." That was definitely excitement at his voice. It was like a game and Eli loved this sort of thing, mostly because he got to use him mind in ways everyday life couldn't challenge him. He was definitely going to see if Shannon could poke around and learn about him. "I'm free for the rest of the day, so it's really up to your schedule."

At the laugh, he calmed down slightly. If it was a joke, he could deal with it far better than an outright insult. He was a strange kid like that. Talking more like this would definitely have to wait until they meet again so that Eli could better pick up on cue from him. Phones still messed him up something fierce and he always had trouble picking up a person's intentions from voice alone.

"For this story, you're my most important resource, so you're technically part of my job until I find another contact," Eli pointed out. He was the source in the police force that he could use for this story and specific case, so his explanation made sense.

"Well, not at the police department, but elsewhere. I could grab a few contacts that could still get me an insight on what your police officers have gathered information wise," he said with a tone a amusement. From what he had gathered so far, he knew that everyone wanted to funnel all contact with reporters and other civilians through Shannon, so it'd be difficult to get another cop contact so entrenched in things. Of course, not many civilians were both Marcus Delacroix's son and defacto leader of the Aspects. He could get around that.

"Sounds like a plan. I'll see you then." And until then, keep his growing excitement to a minimum, but considering his emotional state, that'd be incredibly difficult to do. But he'd try to be emotionally stable for the cute guy who hasn't quite gotten to know him yet. He'll let him in on that fact about him if they get closer to each other.

Eli was already there, having taken a seat away from the majority of the foot traffic. When he saw Shannon, his illusion ears perked up along his tail flicking back and forth for a moment before swishing lazily. He then stood and walked over towards him, definitely glad to see him.

"Mister Vaughn, good to see you again," he said as he got over to him and stayed enough away to not get tangled up in either man or dog. His emotions were already starting to key up a bit, though he was doing his best to keep himself under control. He couldn't help it. Eli really was glad to see him again. "I'm sitting over here."
