The museum had been fantastic. Casey was still getting over how educated and charming Gabriel was, even in the midst of breathtaking art both magical and mundane, they just couldn't take their eyes off him the entire time. It was embarrassing, being caught more than once, but it was hard not to look and be in pleased wonder every time he was still there. This was real and it was all for Casey, and that was something they were going to cherish for a very long time. This was one of their first dates after the fateful party where they'd met and yet... walking down the road, hand-in-hand, making their way to dinner as the sun gave way to dazzling stars and galaxies residing beyond...

It felt only natural.

Thoughts going into far too sappy a direction, Casey raised their free hand and covered their mouth to prevent the smile trying to blossom. Oh, Gabriel was definitely going to think they were going too far, too fast, too swept off their feet. They had to be missing something somewhere. If they could just keep following the right steps a little while longer before Gabriel caught on to how clueless they were about all this, then... then maybe they could make it real. Fake it until you make it.

"I'm having fun," they said, more of a murmur considering their hand was still trying to stifle the smile. "I hope you are, too. Are you?"

"Cute when I'm...?" Casey trailed off at being shifted around, face still cherry red and expression abortive but unable to look away from Gabriel now that they had been given permission. It was definitely embarrassing, but at the same time it was fun. Teasing that didn't throw them off their game. "That's not fair when you're always cute."

Maybe not the best way to describe someone who was drop dead gorgeous, but at the moment Gabriel was definitely acting adorably and that definitely changed how he was being perceived. It wasn't a bad thing, though.

"You don't have to do that for me," they said. "Be yourself before you're someone else for another, right?"

"You're always cute, but even more so when you look like that," Gabriel said, grinning at the humanoid at his side. There might be a species difference, but he didn't care since he knew in his soul that Casey was a dragonaught. His dragonaught, the soulmate he's been needing all his life. "Excuse me, I think you mean handsome, not cute."

Hope you don't mind a massive ego, Casey.

"It's not changing who I am so much as showing you who I am in moderation so that you don't get overwhelmed." Pulling them closer with the arm slung over them, he looked down at them, seeming perfectly content with them. "After all, I don't want to scare you away."

"I mean attractive," Casey said in defense of their word choice. Of course Gabriel was handsome too, but there were a lot of other ways to describe someone that were just as acceptable. Then again, Casey hated being called handsome or fine or anything like that, and briefly wondered if Gabriel felt the same about the reverse. "Bet you look amazing even when you're not all fancy for a date."

Egos were just fine. Casey could even learn a thing or two from watching Gabriel operate.

"You're basically the best thing that's happened to me," they said, biting their bottom lip momentarily before nodding and turning to look ahead instead. Someone who seemed so thoroughly invested and loving toward Casey without asking for anything in return was almost too good to be true. "So you couldn't possibly do that. As long as you don't mind being with a... a sissy boy or whatever," they added in a self-conscious mumble.

"There are different kinds of attractive. Take you, for example. You're soft, delicate. Beautiful." At the last word, Gabriel stroked the side of Casey's face as if to emphasize just how beautiful he thought they were to him. They were androgynous and Gabriel thought that more beautiful than gentle feminine and harsh masculine, something neither and both at the same time. "You hold yourself to a different standard than most people and I think that's the most gorgeous thing about you."

He dropped his hand the moment he felt Casey's head start to move, smiling momentarily before his expression hardened. Gabriel may not have been humanoid, but he knew enough about them to know what Casey was talking about. "Don't you dare call yourself that. When I first saw you, I didn't see a man or a woman. I saw you and I know that you're neither. I never asked what you were because I already knew and I didn't want to make you uncomfortable by forcing you to share yourself before you were ready."

Casey momentarily froze up, halting their stride at the confrontation of the issue. Many things occurred to them at once, one of them being that they had just ruined something somewhere, that Gabriel had been waiting for them, and now Casey had just forced it with their self-depreciation. His previous comments about how beautiful they were only sat awkwardly in their stomach with this, putting pieces together and feeling both happy and incredibly unsure at the same time.

"I... I'm sorry," they said, not sure how to react to such a vehement denial. Someone understanding and standing up for their identity was a new experience, especially when the one he was defending it to was Casey themselves. It felt like fishing for compliments, like they hadn't deserved that for acting rotten rather than showing off something good. "That isn't what I was—this isn't... You're the first person to ever say something like that! I didn't... know..."

That was more than a terrible excuse. They should have realized, might have noticed Gabriel wouldn't take it as a joke, and now the seriousness was startling in a way they weren't used to. Having someone to stand up for Casey against their own thoughts was kind of nice. Just completely unexpected, and Casey didn't want to scare Gabriel off by admitting it wasn't just a one-time thing.

The moment when Casey stopped moving, Gabriel took advantage of the fact to keep moving and position himself so that he was standing in front of them, facing them and just as close to them as they were before. He pulled them into a tight hug and kissed their forehead gently, not mad nor upset by how Casey was responding to this. Gabriel might be young for a dragon, but he was still over a century old and understood that sometimes people couldn't think of themselves very highly and he could tell this was what was happening with them.

"There's nothing you need to apologize for. Nobody's ever seen you for yourself before. I might be the first person, but I won't be the last, I promise you," he said gently as he tilted their head up slightly so that he could kiss them properly on the lips, slow and intimate and showing just how much Gabriel cared for Casey in this on action.

Even with Gabriel moving around them, they stood still. Being pulled into a hug was surprising, pleasantly so, and that gentle motion inspired them to relax against Gabriel more easily. This was a difficult thing, one they weren't ready to face head-on yet, but this... this moment with Gabriel was something Casey would never forget.

Arms reaching up to rest around Gabriel's neck, Casey responded to the kiss in kind. Seriously, what had they ever done to deserve someone who only needed one look at Casey to think they were perfect? It was as if they'd won a jackpot they didn't even know was running, much less had entered. When the kiss reached an end, Casey's eyes opened slowly and they stared up at Gabriel with wonder and amazement, love blossoming in their chest hot and unfamiliar. "Thank you," Casey whispered.

"You don't have to thank me, but you're welcome," Gabriel answered softly as he looked down at them. He had only said what he believed, after all, and he didn't want to be thanked for actual common sense when it came to someone that he loved, but he'd accept the thanks even if he didn't want it because it came from his dragonaught and that was better than any thanks or praise from anyone else.

"We should hurry up to the restaurant though." Despite his words, Gabriel had no movement to start walking, instead waiting for Casey to make the first move. It was their comfort that he cared for and he was going to separate from them until they were ready to. He cared far too much to try to push them too much after dealing with such a sensitive topic.

"I'll always thank you," Casey said in a rather low-voiced mumble. There was nothing else they could think of to repay Gabriel for the kindness, the joy of having someone who said they didn't care for anything but who Casey was, and that the who was a beautiful thing. They didn't know how else to accept it. Was there really anything Casey could do to return this? They weren't sure, but they were going to try.

At the reminder of where they had been going, Casey tilted their head down and rested it against Gabriel's chest, just long enough to take a deep breath. He smelled nice, inexplicably warm, and they let the scent settle through them before pulling back. "I'll race you, then we won't be late."

When Gabriel heard Casey mention a race, a mischievous glint appeared in his eyes and he grinned widely. Dragons always loved a good competition and he was no exception. Pulling away from them, he went to stand next to them, leaning over to give them a kiss on the cheek at the idea of racing to the restaurant.

"You sure you want to race me?" There was definitely a fair bit of pride in his voice as he asked the question. Even in human form, he had the power his kind was known for and it was highly possible that he was going to win this race. "I'm not going to go easy on you just because I like you."

"Of course not," Casey said with a scoff. Seeing Gabriel already getting so into it, they shifted into a readied stance and tilted their head toward the man next to them. This was going to be fun, win or lose. That said, Casey did have a secret weapon up their sleeve.

"And... go!"

They darted off, limbs akimbo for that one moment before they got themselves underway and tucked in for a better run. It probably helped a lot that Casey knew where they were going while Gabriel wouldn't be sure of which restaurant to stop at and all.

As soon as Casey said go, Gabriel immediately bolted off, laughing happily as he did. He didn't care about what anybody else thought, seeing him running down the street like an overgrown child with his date running with him. This was fun and he was having fun just being with Casey. The only downside was that he wasn't in his proper form and couldn't show off just how great he was at this.

"How about we make a bet? Winner gets dessert, loser gets to watch them eat it?" He looked at Casey for a second, nearly bumping into someone as he did and shouting out a quick apology as he kept going. "It'll be fun, what do you think?"

Well, Gabriel certainly had cause to be cocky about how he would do in the race. Casey blinked, watched the other zoom by, then tried to put more of a sprint in their step. It likely wouldn't work in the end, not with Gabriel teasing and talking through the race like he was, but that was fine. Casey wasn't in this to show off like that. Considering they weren't trying to show off and run backwards or stop focusing on where they were going, at least Casey was doing better at ducking and weaving.

"Loser has to buy it, too?" If a bet was going to be made, then of course it wouldn't be half-assed. Casey would see it through to the end, even if they were almost definitely going to lose the race.

He couldn't help up show off to his dragonaught. This was how dragons courted their mates, after all, and despite the difference in species, Gabriel still thought of the humanoid as a potential mate due to the feeling of his dragonaught that he got from Casey. He had to show off for them and prove that he was going to be the best choice in mate for them.

"Loser definitely has to buy it." Now he was really going to do his best to win. After all, he had a plan for dessert and what he was going to do with it in regards to Casey.

There was a lot Casey didn't understand about who Gabriel was or what he was doing any of this for, but his showing off was rather clear. They didn't mind at all, just felt rather entertained for the childish actions. There was no real competition here as far as Casey was concerned, not for their attentions.

"As long as the winner doesn't bankrupt the loser with it," Casey stipulated. It was only fair they didn't try to one-up each other too much for the rest of the evening.

They were going to find out soon enough. While Gabriel might be hiding things from them, he ultimately did want them to know who and what he was so that they could truly be together, but he was keeping that a secret for now because he didn't want to cause panic or drive them away by revealing that he was a dragon and a very powerful one at that.

"You've got yourself a deal," he said as he grinned. Thankfully, his plan was cheap and definitely going to be worth it, if only for the expression he could imagine Casey making once they realized what Gabriel had planned for dessert.

Casey didn't respond to that part, now focusing on running and trying to see if they could edge in on Gabriel. They doubted it would pay out in the end, but no one could say Casey gave up easily and there was more fun to it if they both put effort into the race. Just something minor to bond over, even if those at the restaurant probably wouldn't appreciate a couple of grown humans showing up sweaty and out of breath from the run.

Regardless, losing wasn't going to hold any sort of sting. It was only another tick on why Gabriel was awesome to Casey, and they suspected the list would pile up the longer they continued to go out. Gabriel was everything Casey could have wanted or needed, and that was enough to frighten and comfort them at the same time. For now, it was easy to push aside simply to race. When they ended up losing as they thought, it was with an easy laugh and a shrug.

They had dinner. It was good, much more calm and relaxed and a chance to wind down from what had happened and what they spoke about on the way over. At one point, Casey had placed their hand down halfway across the table and hadn't been disappointed when Gabriel took it up. Then dinner was over almost too soon and they were leaving when Gabriel said the dessert he wanted wasn't something to get from a place like that. Now intrigued and definitely ready to see what he had in mind, Casey followed their date down the street.

Dinner had definitely been nice and he had enjoyed eating with Casey, even if Gabriel preferred the whole livestock he usually ate at home. Humanoids tended to cook their food too much and ruin the flavor of it by doing so. Not that Gabriel was going to tell Casey that since they didn't even know he was a dragon yet.

Since he had won the race, Gabriel was leading Casey to a place he knew about nearby. Deciding to be a tease, he wasn't going to tell them where they were going, but when they arrived it was very obvious as to what it was. It was an ice cream shop, a hole in the wall compared to one of those bigger chain places that were popping up. Leading them inside, Gabriel looked over and smiled.

"Here we are. Now this is the right place to get dessert." Gabriel walked over to the counter and seemed to look thoughtful at the selection for a moment while sneaking glances over at Casey and smiling. Once he appeared satisfied with his decision, he started to order. "Two scoops of vanilla ice cream in a cone please."

The ice cream shop was unexpected. Casey knew of it, of course, saw it every now and then when out and about or walking Bunnit since this wasn't too terribly far from their apartment building, but the fact that Gabriel chose it over anywhere else wasn't what had been expected. Places like this didn't tend to run too expensive lest they put themselves out of business, so there was no real worry.

Just a lot of curiosity.

Casey stood back while Gabriel ordered, a bemused look no doubt on their face. Something was up, wasn't it. Some kind of joke about to be pulled? Casey didn't know, but they didn't make any moves before Gabriel got his dessert, then stood up to the counter and paid for it with a curious glance up to him. "Just that?"

"Just this," Gabriel confirmed as he held the cone and started to lick around the edges where the ice cream was already about to melt. Gesturing to Casey, he went and sat down at a table, facing away from the counter. There was nobody else there besides the two of them and the person running the shop, so he'd get to have his fun with Casey without worrying about making a scene.

"Expecting something else?" Now he was really going to put his plan into action and started to lick the ice cream sensually, nice and slow so that Casey could take a good look and see what he was doing. There was a reason that the stipulation was that the loser had to watch the winner eat, after all, and this was it.

"Something a little... less..."

It was hard to come up with a quip once Casey saw what Gabriel was really doing. Their mouth fell open and suddenly they couldn't even look away if they had wanted to. Well, things were suddenly falling into place and Casey shifted in their seat, tried to keep their breathing even. Seeing that tongue working around the cone and the white vanilla flavor was not doing any favors for Casey's imagination.

They huffed in put-on annoyance for the show, gaze turning momentarily into a glare without even turning it on Gabriel, and bit their lower lip to keep from reacting any more. This was definitely not fair... or wouldn't have been fair if Casey hadn't lost that race earlier and agreed to this. What a tease.

That was exactly the reaction he wanted to elicit from them. He had wanted to tease them a little bit with the ice cream and had gone straight for vanilla just for the mental images he was sure were showing up in their mind right now. Seeing them trying to keep from reacting anymore was a sign that Gabriel had to step up his game a bit. Stopping his licking, Gabriel then started to suck on the top of the ice cream for a long moment before he licked the top back into a round shape.

"Is something the matter, Casey?" He sounded positively innocent while licking away the ice cream that was on his lips, absolutely putting on a show for them. Taking another long, slow lick of the ice cream, he looked directly at Casey. "Do you want some?"

Dear gods, Gabriel was really going for the gold. Casey couldn't help but suck their breath in, trying to hold it and their reaction at bay. They let go of their lip in order to lick at it and closed a hand resting on the table into a fist. It was a good thing no one else was there because this was not something Casey would want anyone to see.

They swallowed hard at that look, that question. Of course Casey wanted some, and that wasn't just in reference to the ice cream. Their blood was pumping, moving and Casey murmured, "Yeah," before leaning in to get a lick of the ice cream. Bottom of the scoop to the top, rolling it on their tongue and lapping it up before tilting their head just enough and pressing their lips together.

If embarrassment was a good look on them, then this was downright gorgeous. He loved seeing what he was doing to them and even though it was his human form, part of him wondered if Casey would feel the same way if this was his dragon form, licking at the ice cream with his long, forked tongue. Maybe when he decides to tell them what he is, he'll test that theory, but for now, he'll stick to enjoying this.

When Casey answered in the affirmative, Gabriel met them halfway, his hand reaching out to cover their fist. The lick was definitely fun to watch and he wasn't surprised when it turned into a kiss. He returned it eagerly enough, making a soft little noise of approval while he did. After a moment, he pulled away with the ice cream and looked at Casey for a brief second and moved back in. "Hold on, there's a little bit--" Cutting himself off, he licked the edge of Casey's mouth to get some stray ice cream from their kiss and then pulled away for what seemed to be for good. "There we go, much better."

The kiss was good, Casey's hand being covered only helped egg them on more. That warmth radiating off Gabriel mixing with the rapidly disappearing cool of the ice cream made a delightful contrast and Casey shifted closer in their seat to press further into the kiss all the way up until it was over. Their eyes were a bit unfocused and breath affected, but they smiled when Gabriel leaned over and finished what he'd started.

"Much better," Casey muttered under their breath. It was better, for all that Casey was going to have to get some of this stress under control before the night was over. At least now they had more than just visuals to work with. "You're such a tease. This was your plan all along, wasn't it?"
