when I was young and just getting started [ psl ]

WHO Belthazor ([personal profile] devilsinthedetails) and Chris Halliwell ([personal profile] chriscross)
WHAT A summoner and his summon go on a quest to prove themselves, but end up saving the world instead.
WHEN After Chris's fourteenth birthday at some point
WHERE In a town along their path
WHY because Leo will always be the most terrible of fathers

It was going to be a good day to be traveling. Even early in the morning as it was, Belthazor could tell that it was going to be ideal conditions that wouldn't slow them down. They were at an inn, taking advantage of the rare times they were able to stop in a town and rest. Chris was still sleeping, though Belthazor was about to change that. Walking over to his master's bed, he reached down and poked his forehead gently, making sure to not scratch him with his claw.

"Summoner." Belthazor's mental 'voice' rang sharply through the link, using emotions and memories to convey his intent to Chris far better than his own made up sign language could. Besides, it was hard to make hand signals that a sleeping boy could read, thus poking and mental communication. Seeing that it wasn't quite working, Belthazor poked the summon sigil on Chris's abdomen none too gently. "Summoner, you need to wake up."

Chris wasn't really ready to wake up. Although it had been weeks, almost months since the Event that killed his mother and cemented his status as a full-fledged summoner, the memories still haunted him and attacked in his sleep. It was nothing he wanted to face, but nothing he could really deny as being accidental or unrelated to him. Not being able to summon Belthazor in time was definitely his fault, being bound to something that wanted to hate him probably had to do with Chris, his inability to let Belthazor physically speak was definitely a shortcoming of his ability and power. So far, his time as a summoner had been filled with personal failures and only minor victories in the towns they'd visited that needed their intervention. His rest was constantly troubled and Chris was often reaching for more when he could.

Grunting in aggravation, Chris curled up and turned away from the offending finger. The voice in his head was all too familiar, reminiscent of disappointment and strict business talk, someone who didn't care but should. It was Leo's voice that Belthazor's own disdain conjured in Chris's head and he wondered if the summon knew how his thought projections were received or if it was all just a translation on his own end. Not that he was willing to ask, anyway. "No," he mumbled sleepily. They were safe and in a town for once, why couldn't they sleep in to fully regain their strength, anyway?
