While he was doing that, he was subtly manipulating Shannon's nerves to make the training on this particular subject easier for Shannon. From where Michelle was, she knew exactly what Eli was doing and couldn't disapprove of it. He had one of the better powers for this sort of thing and he was definitely using it to their advantage. Training Shannon with them would let them not have to focus on that and instead worry more about the scene itself and give both the three of them and the crowd a good time.
