It was really quite obvious that Eli wasn't in the right mental state to be reasoned with. While he had his unreasonable moments thanks to his emotional instability, it was never this bad as he could have some semblance of control over himself. Thankfully for Matheus' sake, he wasn't being violent for the sake of it and the zapping was only to influence him into going with what he wanted.
