Even without the electric signal of Eli practically sparking, Shannon could tell when his mood had shifted. They hadn't been friends for nearly six years for him to ignore the signs and carry on without noticing. Explaining the real situation at this point would only turn the sulk into a destructive one, so the better way to go would be to give Eli something to be happy about instead, and possibly revisit the problem at a later time.
