The fact that Shannon was siding with him made Eli more confident that he had done the right thing instead of screwing things up. He nodded in agreement at Shannon's assessment and held up a finger.
"Exactly my point. There's also the possibility that if the ring line wasn't as stark like you said, he could be divorced and thus not be wearing the ring anymore," Eli pointed out calmly. "But we're reporters, not the police, so anything we come up with is pure speculation and nothing we can print."
He couldn't help but snicker at Avery trying to puff himself up. Even without the ears, Eli was taller than them both and had no qualms about standing up straight to look down at Avery in every possible way that he could. When he finally stormed off, Eli tilted his head towards Shannon and smiled.
"I never expected anything else," he replied. "I hate reporters like that. They make up crazy theories and then pass them off as truth. It's an insult to the profession that guys like him are crawling around printing that trash."
