Souls abide to an Endless desire. [ psl ]

WHO Shannon Vaughn ([personal profile] privatematter), Eli Delacroix ([personal profile] aspectional).
WHAT Meet cute. This may or may not be a Loveless fusion.
WHEN 1984. Shannon is 7 28, Eli is 19.
WHERE Chicago, [wherever their region is, I don't remember. We totally figured it out once, though].

The scene was not pretty. Shannon couldn't see it, strictly speaking, but he had been given the brief and knew what had happened. He could smell the copper on the air and it rested like lead on his tongue no matter what he did. That was always how it was when dealing with a murder; the taste lasted for days, sometimes even after the case was closed. It never let him forget what they were dealing with, and while Shannon Vaughn was not the most compassionate man on earth, he felt anger bubble up inside of him whenever he was confronted with one human killing another for some petty reason or another. It was always petty when measured up to the price of another human life.

Then again, it was part of the job. He enjoyed his work, enjoyed (most of) the people he worked with, and he did his part of the job well. Catching the sons of bitches who thought they could shatter peace with no consequence, that their wills were above those of everyone around them, that last moment at the end of the day where the war was not given up and evil had not won, was worth it. His parents didn't really understand why Shannon had wanted to work with the police when he had so many other options, things that weren't so limited by his abnormality. His blindness. That was exactly why he did it, though, the satisfaction of not letting anything get in the way of feeling right. When it came down to it, Shannon just wanted others to feel safe. His part of the work now entailed checking in with any witnesses who had heard the fight in the alley, the screams as the mugger brought out the knife. Thank God for tape recorders, or it may have taken even longer than his seven years tenure to be allowed to take witness statements without any way to officially keep it on record.

He was walking the perimeter now, ears at half-mast while he kept his head tilted and tried to make any heads or tails of the gossip around him, see if maybe anyone had been holding out or noticed something without realizing what they had seen. Lacey was waiting by the truck, drinking from her bowl after escorting Shannon all around the scene while the actual cops had set up. The body was still in the alley and the investigators were crowding around and making it near-impossible for onlookers to get a peek. With the POLICE jacket and his glasses on, Shannon knew he cut an official-looking figure, if incredibly young thanks to his ears, and not the blind police aide that had never attended any sort of law enforcement academy. Now it was up to Shannon to head off any questions or make any statements requested while the officers did their work.

"Oh now you're teasing me. I know you can tell where I'm at just by voice and whatever other sounds I'm making," he said as he reached out and grabbed Shannon's free hand lightly, his grasp easy enough for Shannon to slip away from if he really wanted to. "Follow me."

He wasn't going to drag him over to the table. His other memories gave him some knowledge of dealing with blind people and he wasn't going to be an utter dick by treating him as weak or just dragging him around, especially if he had a guide dog. That'd just be mean to the poor girl and he wasn't going to get on Shannon's bad side for interfering with his guide dog.

He didn't really have much of a problem with the reaction. Some were always more independent than others and knowing just how far Shannon would let him go was something he'd rather find out sooner rather than later. Eli would definitely keep that in mind for the future and wait for Shannon to ask instead of him presuming.

"I've dealt with blind people before. Runs in my family. Or so I've been told." Thomas was legally blind and Nate always had the unfortunate ability to lose his eyesight whenever he abused his power, so Eli definitely counted that among his counters, even if it happened another universe ago. "Sorry about the grabbing. I'm kind of a touchy guy. Very tactile."

Eli hadn't ordered anything yet, wanting to wait to do so when Shannon arrived. Sitting in his own seat, he leaned back and studied him carefully for a long moment. He still wanted to touch those ears and see how soft they were, but he'd definitely have to wait for that to ever happen.

"Well then, how about we fix that?" He sounded incredibly cheerful about that, the wide grin on his face very obvious in his voice. Eli was always chipper to some degree and it was definitely strange when he got more excited than he should be on things. "Eli Delacroix, lowly reporter and somewhat of a mystery. Pleasure to meet you." For a brief moment on his last name, his accent shifted to a French accent before returning to his normal Chicago accent.

"Tu ne parles pas français, Monsieur Vaughn. Your accent is terrible," he replied with amusement. He knew he was mimicking him, but he was going to give him a hard time if Shannon was going to give him one. It seemed only fair to him. There was also a small grin at Shannon's ears. They were the best read Eli had on him and he was going to take advantage of that fact.

"Got any questions you want to ask me for the sake of getting to know me?" Eli was going to try stretching this out as long as possible. There was no hurry for him to go back to the office and into his editor's warpath, plus he really wanted to talk to Shannon and get to know him as well. He was cute, yes, but there was more to him than that and Eli wanted to know what all that was.

"Jūs neturite kalbėti lietuviškai." Now he was just straight up fucking with him, still grinning as he spoke. "City as big and diverse as Chicago and you only speak English? I'd be disappointed, but Americans. Not too late for you to learn if you want to though."

He didn't answer at first, only smiling at the question. It was definitely the most obvious one people went with considering his false ears and general looks. "I'm around nineteen or so. We don't exactly know how old I really am. And I've been on the job for only a couple months, so I'm pretty new to all this."

"School's terrible for learning languages anyway. Immersion's the way to go. You pick up on things pretty quickly. Plus, Lithuanian isn't taught in American schools. I checked." There was a bit of cheekiness in his response and it was easy to tell that he was grinning, it bleeding through his words. "I could teach you if you ever decided to change your mind."

Now that was a complicated subject, his finding by Marcus. "Yeah, that's pretty much what happened." All of the paperwork Marcus had for Eli said he was adopted, but it definitely wasn't something official thanks to the Aspects and the fact nobody would really believe the truth about where Eli came from. "It was more like the guy who usually takes the cases was sick and since I'm the new kid and nobody else wanted it, the article was dropped onto my lap. Plus, I'm just fascinated by death and I was found in a graveyard, so this is right up my alley."

"You would think, but yet it isn't. People tend to take the easier route for things than do something different that would actually be helpful." He may be young, but Eli was definitely perceptive about the world around him. At Shannon's ears, he just smiled and leaned forward to rest his chin on his hands as he studied Shannon carefully. "I'm willing to teach you, an obviously capable and intelligent individual, a language to better help deal with people you may interact with in your job."

"Found in a graveyard on my father's grave." It was the easiest way to describe it and honestly, Eli preferred calling Cyril his father instead of Thomas. He still wasn't happy about what Thomas did to him. "None of the above? I find it interesting in a philosophical standpoint, not in the practical sort. I like the whys of someone dying, not the hows."

"And there are other times where it's a mix of both," he pointed out. Eli kept his voice steady, making it hard to read any emotion from it and glean from it his own thoughts on the subject. He then scoffed lightly at Shannon's comment, sounding more amused by the thought than anything. "There's no catch. I'm just a strange guy who likes to teach people other languages as an excuse to get practice with the massive amount of languages I don't get to use normally."

Later rather than sooner, Shannon would learn that Eli knew everything about his adoption and how it came about. Until then, it'd be a secret. "Not much. Victim's name's an unknown, but I do know murder weapon and probable cause of death."

"Thought about it once, but it didn't work out." Dealing with Matheus and Javier was a bit too much for him when he was younger, so he tried to avoid the police whenever possible. Not that he would say that he was avoiding the police since that would bring up ridiculous insinuations that he had something to hide and he didn't care much for that.

"Well, I hope you've got more than the journalist," he said with some cheer in his voice. Even if Shannon didn't have anything, it was worth it to talk to him for just this bit of time and give him the chance to check out Shannon far more than he could yesterday.

"When Vasquez and Rocha finally leave, let me know and I'll try again," he said, masking his bitterness behind slight resignation. He knew that those two weren't going to leave as long as he was in Chicago and there was nothing he could do about it. "If it works out, let me know. My schedule's flexible."

Oh, he was definitely checking him out and taking advantage of this chance to do so in the most subtle way that he could. "And we wouldn't want that to happen. After all, it's your job to catch the criminals and not mine."
